About the Theme

Sisterly is built on the idea that some of the most meaningful parts of life take shape through our relationships with women. Through friendship, care, community, and the women who help us become who we are.

For our first issue, we’re especially interested in work that explores sisterhood in all its forms: chosen family, female friendship, support, ritual, belonging, and what it means to move through life alongside other women.

What We’re Looking For

For our inaugural issue, we’re looking for thoughtful work that explores sisterhood. This can be emotionally, visually, practically, and creatively.

We’re currently open to submissions in the following categories:

Writing

  • Personal essays

  • Thoughtful service pieces

  • Reflections on friendship, connection, and female community

  • Stories about support, heartbreak, healing, or becoming

Photography

  • Editorial-style photo essays

  • Intimate or documentary-style imagery

  • Images that capture female friendship, gathering, or sisterhood

  • Visual storytelling connected to the theme of sisterhood

Illustration & Art

  • Illustrations

  • Fine art / mixed media

  • Visual interpretations of female friendship, gathering, or sisterhood

  • Artwork that feels emotionally resonant, beautiful, or powerful

We’re especially interested in work that feels honest, grounded, and deeply personal.

Examples of What Could Fit

To help spark ideas, here are a few examples of the kinds of work that could feel at home in this issue:

Writing

  • A friendship that changed your life

  • The kind of advice you’d give a younger sister

  • A service piece about building stronger friendships or community

Photography

  • A photo series of female friendship or chosen family

  • Images that capture gathering, intimacy, care, or everyday beauty

  • Portraits or visual storytelling centered on women, connection, or belonging

Illustration & Art

  • Artwork inspired by sisterhood, memory, connection, or ritual

  • Visual interpretations of sisterhood

  • Pieces that feel intimate, layered, nostalgic, playful, or emotionally evocative

These are only meant as inspiration. We’re open to thoughtful interpretations of the theme.

What Feels Like a Fit

Sisterly content should feel warm, honest, and thoughtful. We love work that’s emotionally resonant or genuinely useful, with writing that feels intimate but not like oversharing.

We’re not looking for overly polished, generic advice, trend-driven takes, or anything made for clicks instead of connection.

A Note on Tone

Think:

  • something you’d send to a close friend

  • something that feels thoughtful and clear

  • something that captures the beauty or complexity of sisterhood

Not:

  • overly formal

  • overly optimized

  • or trying too hard to be profound

Submission Guidelines

  • Please include a link to your work (Google Doc, portfolio, Dropbox, Drive folder, website, etc.)

  • Make sure sharing permissions are enabled for submissions@sisterlymagazine.com

  • You’re welcome to submit completed work or a strong pitch/concept

  • Selected work will be considered for our print + digital magazine

  • For visual submissions, please only send work you own or have the rights to share

  • While not every piece must explicitly use the word sisterhood, it should feel meaningfully connected to the theme

What to Expect

We review every submission carefully, but may not be able to respond individually to each one.

If your work feels like a strong fit for Sisterly, we’ll be in touch.

If selected, we may follow up for higher-resolution files, usage permissions, or additional context around the work.
